History
The building dates back to 1844 and originally served as a cigar factory. It is particularly famous for the large boulder chained to the corner of the building. This stone was placed there as a protective corner stone and ultimately gave the building its name. Several legends surround "De Gesloten Steen" ("The Chained Stone"). One tale tells of the devil and his servant tossing the stone back and forth at night between the nearby Geertebrug and Vollersbrug bridges. During one throw, the stone missed its target and crashed into the ground with such force that nearby houses shook on their foundations. To put an end to the devilish disturbance, the townspeople chained the boulder in place—hence the name "The Chained Stone."
