History
The building dates back to 1844 and originally served as a cigar factory. It is best known for the large boulder chained to the corner of the building. The stone was placed there as a protective corner stone and eventually gave the building its name.

Several legends surround “De Gesloten Steen” (“The Chained Stone”). One tale tells of the devil and his servant tossing the stone back and forth at night between the nearby Geertebrug and Vollersbrug bridges. When they missed a throw, the stone struck the ground with such force that nearby houses shook to their foundations. To put an end to the devilish disturbances, the townspeople chained the boulder in place.
